It’s Now Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich

The times, they are really changing in the strong 2012 GOP presidential candidates field. At this point, the top two contenders are Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. Mitt Romney never seems to increase in the polls, but continues to be steady. My Democratic Facebook buddies derisively call Romney’s closest challenger, the flavor of the month and I have to admit there is truth to the flavor of the month jab. It has been Romney and Bachmann, Romney and Perry, Romney and Cain (for a hot minute) and now Romney and Gingrich.

Well, concerning my Democratic friends, regardless of who we elect to be President in 2012, it will be wide open for Democratic presidential contenders in 2016 which will be here faster than you think. Hey, look how fast this presidential season came! It will be interesting to see how they will defend their flavors of the month.

Newt Gingrich appears to be gaining on Mitt Romney. Which is a great surprise, because it did not seem that anybody was listening to Newt. I was wrong about that, but are enough listening to elect him to be the next leader of this country? Some Democrats would love for him to be the Republican challenger, because they feel he would give Pres. Obama an easy electoral victory in 2012. They see Mr. Gingrich as only exciting most of the base. They do not see him exciting the conservative base that still wants him to account for his philandering while married. Plus, they feel he would hardly bring over any Democrat or Independent voters.

The Republican presidential convention is still more than a half a year away and there has yet to be any primary and caucus voting. But, the Obama campaign is already going after Mitt Romney as if he is the Republican presidential nominee in late September 2012. Is that because they see Romney as being able to take away Democratic and Independent votes from Pres. Obama, or are they just lame in their assessment of the GOP challengers?
